I'm a medical student, which means I spend almost all my time in a chair, staring at my computer screen, studying.  Though I've taken the basic steps (raising my monitor, etc), spending all my time sitting upright is murder on my back. It's actually become a real distraction. So I had a thought... Why not get an HMD, allowing me to study reclining, lying down, etc?So, I'm hoping that some of you VR enthusiasts can recommend a good way for me to go. I've heard about the Sony HMZ-T1 with 720 resolution, is that good for use as a monitor? Most of the HMD units I've seen online seem to be intended for watching movies rather than viewing a computer screen...I am nearsighted, will this be an issue? Most of my studying involves taking notes with LibreOffice on the left half of the screen, while I look at a PDF or video lecture on the right half... I usually use a 1080P monitor, though 720 or thereabouts would probbaly do fine. Widescreen is a good thing, if that matters. Are there 720 or better solutions besides the Sony? Also important... What do VR enthusiasts typically do for input while wearing an HMD? Some type of keyboard? Mouse? Thanks very much!

Hi Aj, The new SONY HMD, the

Hi Aj,

The new SONY HMD, the HMZ-T1 is the best consumer option on the market. I haven't reviewed it yet but based on the specs, it represents the new top consumer-level HMD. It is the only 720p option that I know of at that price level.

Now, regarding your intended use for reading text documents and writing notes, this could be more or less a success or failure. It depends on a few factors such as how long will the HMD be used in a continuous period of time. Like I said, I haven't tried it yet so I cannot discuss on the actual optics quality. I recall reading its optics are set to an infinite focal. If that is correct, this could potentially be good news for your reading task as it would lower the strain on your eyes for longer exposures.

The other even bigger problem you will face is when you need to type in text while wearing the HMD. This HMD is not made by nature to be see-through. You can probably see your surrounding from below while wearing it, but it will not be the most practical way to work.

So to recap, I would say, for reading, maybe (depends on the length of a reading session). For working on notes and such, probably not as convenient as you would wish for.
